The feel good musical “Godspell” will open its run at the Indio Performing Arts Center (IPAC) on March 5th with performances on the weekends through April 18th. Show times are 7:00 pm Friday and Saturday evenings and 2:30 pm for Saturday and Sunday matinees. Tickets are $20, $15 for Friends of IPAC members and are available at the box office or by calling 760-775-5200.

“Godspell”, an archaic spelling of the word “Gospel”, is a 1970 musical by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak. It opened off Broadway on May 17, 1971, and has played in various touring companies and revivals many times since. “Godspell” features several hit songs from the Billboard pop singles charts from the 70’s including the song “Day by Day” originally performed by Robert Lamont. IPAC’s production is directed by Bob Reinhagen and has a cast of 10 musical performers, including Cliff Plummer and Rob Reinhagen, who starred in IPAC’s popular production of “The Cardigans” last fall.

Also performing in the show is local cabaret entertainer Gerri Mota, along with Juan Chavez, Anthony Martinez, Eva Vargas, Veronica Padilla, Jessika Pollard, Brittany Olachea and Marissa Escobar, who starred in “A Taffeta Christmas” at IPAC. The structure of the musical is that of a series of parables based on the gospels of Matthew and Luke which are interspersed with a variety of modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns. The show is non-stop music and energy that the whole family will love.

Always Patsy ClineAlways, Patsy Cline

Show Dates - Jan 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16; 21, 22, 23, - Feb 4, 5, 6; 11, 12, 13; 18, 19, 20

“Always… Patsy Cline” begins run at IPAC”

The Indio Performing Arts Center (IPAC) is opening its run of the musical production “Always… Patsy Cline” originally written and directed by Ted Swindley on Friday, January 7 and will perform it on weekends through February 20, 2011.

“Always... Patsy Cline” is based on the true story of Patsy Cline’s friendship with Houston housewife Louise Seger.  Having first heard Cline on the Arthur Godfrey show in 1957, Seger became an immediate and avid fan. In 1961, Seger and her friends met Cline when she performed in Houston and they developed a friendship that lasted until Patsy Cline’s untimely death in 1963.

The Indio Performing Arts Center production is directed by Bob Reinhagen and stars Dia Nalani as Patsy Cline and Jeanette Knight as Louise Seger.  Ms Nalani was born into a musical family in California. She is a trained classical pianist and has played piano professionally since 1983.  Dia has been performing the role of Patsy Cline since 2003.  Like Patsy Cline, Dia’s talent is a God-given gift touching the hearts of young and old alike.  She sings Patsy Cline songs in the original keys and style.

Jeanette Telders Knight began her stage career as a dancer, garnering adjectives like "superb" from Variety.  She has acted in, directed, and/or choreographed productions nationwide.  Signature roles include Mother Teresa in The Dianalogues, L’atrelle in Sordid Lives, Maude in A Coupla White Chicks…, Olive in the female version of The Odd Couple, Edna in Prisoner of Second Avenue, M’Lynn in Steel Magnolias, Melora in John Brown’s Body and Rose in The Woolgatherer, which was performed at the 2001 Tony award-winning theatre, Victory Gardens in Chicago.  She has served as an artist-in-residence for the California Arts Council, Beaumont Actors Studio, and the McCallum Theatre, where she also was its Education Program Manager for nine years.  She is the founder of Joe & Mustard, the desert's only long-form improvisational acting troupe.  Most recently, she directed “Trying” and " The Little Dog Laughed” (starring Greg Louganis) at the Indian Wells Theatre on CSUSB’s Palm Desert campusJeanette currently teaches acting and improv as part of the theatre faculty at the Idyllwild Arts Academy, one of only three arts-based boarding schools in the United States.

Always… Patsy Cline” is performed with a live country band “The Bodacious Bobcats”

featuring musical director John Salerno on piano, Bob Reinhagen on bass (Bob is also the Artistic Director for IPAC), Gerry Antalik on guitar, Ted Plummer on drums, and Jose Salinas on the lap steel guitar.  A total of twenty seven Patsy Cline hits are performed in the show and according to David Clinton-Reid, IPAC President and CEO, “IPAC’s new sound system and speakers will have audiences believing they are at the Grand Old Opry”.

“Memo Rojas, IPAC’s Technical Director, has outdone himself to create a Honky Tonk set and lighting arrangement for the show that will provide audiences with a visual, as well as, a musical feast”, says Bob Reinhagen, IPAC’s Artistic Director.

“Always… Patsy Cline” has been, and is currently, being performed around the country in large and small venues.  To find out more about the musical productions being performed around the country you can visit www.alwayspatsycline.com.

Tickets for IPAC’s production of “Always… Patsy Cline” are now on sale for $20, $15 for Friends of IPAC members.  To become a Friend of IPAC or for Group price information and tickets, call the box office at 760-775-5200.  Show times are 7 pm Friday and Saturday nights, with 2:30 pm matinees on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.  Visit www.indioperformingartscenter.org for information on this and other events and shows at IPAC.

The Indio Performing Arts Center is hosting a showcase event for a rock band from Quebec, Canada. A Message From Rock's Cool.....

"Rock’s cool is an extra-curricular program aimed at developing new talents in our high-school. Since 2005, organizers have been actively supporting teenagers who are interested in rock music to perform as often as possible. The kids' age ranges between 14 to 17. The band is formed by beginners and more advanced musicians, which creates an atmosphere of  learning and development into the group. 28 students form Rock’s Cool, but about 20 will perform live for this important event. Depending of what song we perform, musicians are switching places according to who plays guitar, sings or drums. We are thrilled of having the opportunity to share the stage with bands from the Coachella valley  for this event, especially bands so committed to having the chance to perform live in their area."

DESERT ROCK AT THE IPAC SERIES TO WRAP WITH MINI-COACHELLA-STYLED EXTRAVAGANZA

The first Desert Rock at the IPAC series comes to a climax Saturday, March 26 when 12 of the top bands in the desert perform a “mini-Coachella” concert at the Indio Performing Arts Center.

Some of the best received bands in the six-month series, including Soul Opus, Evaro, Pedestrians Vs. War Party and One11, will join headliner Gram Rabbit in the European festival-type format utilized by the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, with overlapping sets on three stages over four-and-a-half hours.

The bands have been performing for the opportunity to give exposure to the rich indigenous musical heritage of the high and low deserts of Southern California, where desert rock has evolved into a genre that has proven more popular in Europe than its own back yard.

This season finale will be viewed by talent scouts such as Paul Tollett, co-founder of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival; Barnett English, founder of the Joshua Tree Music Festival, Craig Michaels, owner of Musical Affair Entertainment, and several others. Producer Ronnie King, currently recording with The Offspring, and members of the Indio City Council are among the other special guests expected to attend.

The festival is presented by mydesert.com and produced by Mario Lalli Jr., leader of the desert rock pioneers Fatso Jetson, as part of an effort to build a local audience for desert rock and draw a seasonal link between the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio and the city-supported IPAC. Since the first concert in October, many of the diverse bands on the series have gone on to play their original music at such local venues as the Ace Hotel and Space 120 in Palm Springs, and the Date Shed in Indio. The IPAC is the only performing arts center in Southern California to showcase all original rock.

The evening starts at 7 p.m. with opportunities to enjoy imported fine art, band merchandise, two bars, snacks and catered meals. The 300-seat main hall features tables and cushioned chairs and a large dance floor near the stage.

The music starts in the main hall at 7:30 p.m. with One11, the teen band voted the valley favorite band by readers of Desert Magazine in 2010. Their producer, Ronnie King, will sit in with them on keyboards for this special performance.

Big Scenic Nowhere, a psychedelic hard rock band featuring Lalli and two long-time colleagues from the days of the generator parties - Tony Tornay and Gary Arce - will kick off the music in the 125-seat Cabaret Theater at 8 p.m. The Palm Springs-based punk band, Accustomed to Nothing, featuring Lucky Nothing on vocals and guitars, will launch the music in the 125-seat Village Theater at 8:30, just as One11 should be getting off the main stage.

The rest of the evening will feature:

8:30 p.m., main hall: Dali’s Llama, a veteran desert rock band that helped launch the series in October.

9 p.m., Cabaret Theater: The punk band Half-Astro, returning from last month’s Desert Rock at the IPAC concert.

9:30 p.m., Village Theater: You Know Who, the punk band featuring former Brant Bjork sidekick Mike Pygmie that played in the December IPAC concert.

9:30 p.m., main hall: The reggae-rock hybrid Soul Opus, which proved to be one of the most popular bands in the series in November.

10 p.m., Cabaret Theater: Gram Rabbit, veterans of the 2005 Coachella and leaders of the high desert psychedelic rock scene.

10:30 p.m., Village Theater: The powerful desert rock band, The Hellions, who headlined the series preview in October.

10:30 p.m., main hall: Pedestrians Vs. War Party, the punk-inspired show band that wowed audiences in December.

11 p.m., Cabaret Theater: Evaro, the harmonious high desert band that headlined the November IPAC concert.

11:30 p.m., Village Theater: Auto Modown, a highlight of the February concert featuring Lalli on bass with his 16-year-old son, Dino, on lead guitar.

Tickets for the all-ages concert are $10. Information: (760) 775-5200 or the Desert Rock at the IPAC Facebook page.

Mini-Coachella

By Bruce Fessier - The Desert Sun - Copyright 2011

The Indio Performing Arts Center was dancing Sunday like a Blake Griffin 360-dunk.

There probably weren't more than 200 people in the IPAC at any one time, but the crowd flow from one venue to another created an energy that came the closest yet to achieving the venue's goal of creating a mini- Coachella every month.

This Desert Rock at the IPAC concert, presented by mydesert.com, showed the remarkable diversity of the local scene, which, until now, has fed more music to Europe than local institutions. The seemingly eager Electric Children didn't show up, but the evening featured soulful, real-deal reggae by Tribe-O, hard desert rock by Waxy, furious fusion by Penny University, pop punk by One11, classic punk by Half Astro, power instrumental rock by Auto Modown, tight indie rock by Los Mumblerz and two films, including one that featured footage of the 1980s and '90s generator scene that inspired this series, “Test Sight: North American Desert Culture.”

Most surprising were the well-honed performances of two mostly high school-aged bands, One11 and Auto Modown. One11, featuring a middle school-aged drummer, showed writing skills with radio-friendly, Weezer-styled songs and the craftsmanship to execute them professionally.

Auto Modown, featuring Desert Rock at the IPAC executive producer Mario Lalli Jr. on bass, his son, Dino, on guitar and the fluid Benny Macias on drums, powered its way through a winding race course with remarkable cohesion.

The evening ended with Tribe-O and Waxy evoking similar messages with dramatically different sounds. While Tribe-O was singing about one love with its soulful, groove-heavy reggae, the hard rocking Waxy was offering a variation on the theme in “Motorcade,” as frontman Robbie Waldman sang, “It's a blessing just to be alive.”

I'm hoping several of these bands will be invited back to the best of the Desert Rock at the IPAC show on March 26. Watch for an announcement in the next 10 days.

For every music fan who says rock ’n’ roll ain’t what it used to be; for every pundit who concurs with Hunter S. Thompson’s assessment of the music business as “a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free;” there are an equal number who will say that the business of creating and releasing innovative and satisfying music is as healthy as ever — it’s just done on a smaller scale.

Such Hawks, Such Hounds is a testament to the vitality of rock music. Relying only marginally on nostalgia, it says that at any point in history, the music being made is as worthy of attention as that of times past. It’s an introduction to an underheralded subgenre and a realization of its cinematic possibilities.

Such Hawks tells a story that needs to be told. Since the Alternative Revolution of the early 1990s, there has been a heightened interest in music with roots in the underground, hence such excellent genre studies as Hype!, Scratch and American Hardcore. While a similar celebration of sounds held dear, Such Hawks captures a moment as it is happening.

Such Hawks explores the music and musicians of the American hard rock underground circa 1970-2007, focusing on the psychedelic and ’70s proto-metal-derived styles that have in recent years formed a rich tapestry of unclassifiable sounds.

The 84-minute film by Jessica Hundley and John Srebalus, featuring such native musicians as Scott Reeder and Desert Rock at the IPAC Executive Producer Mario Lalli Jr. will be screened at 7 p.m. in one of the 100-seat auditoriums in the IPAC.

The concert will start shortly thereafter in the main 400-capacity room with music by The Town Troubles, The Clouds and Hot Beat, in addition to Spindrift.

Short music videos about other desert rock bands will be screened from the main stage between acts. “Such Hawks, Such Hounds” will continue to be looped simultaneously with the main room activities until the concert is scheduled to end at 11:30 p.m.

The event is presented by mydesert.com and concert goers are encouraged to go to mydesert.com/desertrock after the show to click “recommend” on their favorite bands of the evening. The series producers will consider bands with the most recommends for a return engagement on Saturday, March 26 when talent scouts including Paul Tollett, co-founder of the Coachella Music and Arts Festival, are scheduled to be in attendance.

Lush!Lush

When: June 26th 2011, 2PM
Where: IPAC
Cost: Free

How has alcoholism touched your life?  Studies show that nearly every family in America has grappled with this fatal, progressive illness.  Even 80 years ago, relief from itit was hopeless.  But in 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous was born, and for the first time, hope for recovery dawned.   Its membership snowballed rapidly as the word spread.  Yet AA was “a guy thing” as we’d say today---no women were considered “qualified”.

So when Marty Mann realized that her very life depended on the support of AA, she met with resistance.  How did she become “The First Lady of AA”?  A new play, “LUSH!” rockets us through Marty’s story, and shows how she went on to change millions of other lives.  This unsung, unknown American heroine finally takes the stage!

On Sunday, June 26, locals will have the opportunity to learn about this great lady. The Indio Performing Arts Center invites everyone, free, to the World Premiere of “LUSH!”  The play is written by Valerie-Jean (VJ) Hume, and will be presented as a “reading theatre” experience at 2 PM.  IPAC is located at 45-175 Fargo Street, at the crossroads of Indio Blvd. and Jackson Street.   “The Indio Performing Arts Center prides itself on bringing this event to the community,”  says David Clinton-Reid, IPAC’s Managing Director.  “The arts are the gateway to the soul!”  IPAC can be reached online at www.indioperformingartscenter.org  or at (760) 775-5200.

The actors morph their way in and out of multiple roles, as the play roars through Marty Mann’s extraordinary life.  The cast includes Marcia Harp as Marty, with Debbie Apple playing a Younger Marty.  Featured performers are Will Rian, Danielle Dorta, Ron Young, Lee Fowler-Rice, Dean Apple, and Rebecca Rowley—all playing multiple parts.  Incidental music by talented musician Ted Pethes weaves through the drama, defining the years of Marty Mann’s life.

And VJ Hume also directs.  “This play is a true labor of love,” she smiles. “Such a story!  It’s complex. Marty’s life (1904-80) was tragic and comic, extraordinary and common, upsetting and uplifting.  She was born into wealth and privilege, and wound up homeless and hopeless.  And that’s just the first act!  Wait’ll you see what happens.”

This two-act closes the Desert Theatre League’s 2010-11 season.   Hume’s play, three years in the writing, brings this slice of history right into the audience’s faces, because today, one in every ten people in America is estimated to be an alcoholic. She named it “LUSH!” because, years ago, a friend referred to their mutual girlfriend as a “lush”.  Hume cringed instinctively, realizing the power of the pejorative word.

“Alcoholism has existed since the dawn of history,” she asserts, “and it’s still here. Families are still being torn apart, lives are still destroyed, millions of dollars are misspent every year, fighting this powerful and patient enemy—moreso than in any war.”

Don’t miss Sunday June 26th at 2 PM at IPAC.  This free, one-performance-only experience of “LUSH!” will not easily be forgotten.

The Indio Performing Arts Center (IPAC) received such overwhelming response to its March 15 presentation of “The Abused,” it is adding three more performances, April 26, May 17 and 21.

According to wri-ter/performer Ralph Hernandez, “‘The Abused” takes you through “the childhood memories of growing up with an abusive father and deals with the emotional and physical scars it leaves on a young person. The chilling and graphic testimony of an inmate reliving his past gives a clear description of how abuse is passed on from generation to generation and how it changes lives forever.”

The goal of Hernandez is to shine a light on the darkness of abuse, calling for an end to domestic violence, child, elderly and sexual abuse and bullying in schools.

Curtain Time: “The Abused,” 7-8 p.m. Tues., April 26 and May 17; Sat., May 21, Indio Performing Arts Center. Ticket information: (760) 775-5200.
